How the project started:

The Happy Classrooms project emerged from the need to improve the learning environments in government primary schools. The classrooms there are usually dark and bare, have little or no teaching materials and are overcrowded by often more than 200 students. As a result the standard of education is very poor.

When boNGO started the early childhood education program it soon became clear that children graduating from boNGO’s Model Childcare Centers were introduced to a much lower standard of learning upon entering the primary school.

To reduce the difference boNGO partnered with the primary schools in which boNGO’s pre-school graduates were enrolled, and decorated the Standard 1 and Standard 2 classrooms with child-friendly, syllabus-related paintings.

The change it brought was great: teachers started to use a wider variety of teaching methods; and children concentrated better, remembered things easier, and school for them has become a more interesting, inspiring and friendly place.

Seeing the positive impact of the decorated walls, it was implemented in other ten rural primary schools and given the name 'Happy Classrooms' project. Soon the project began to be replicated in as many primary schools as funding would allow.

From June 2011 till December 2014 over one thousand classrooms (both in cities and in remote areas) were transformed into Happy Classrooms with the financial support from various partners.

So far we have been concentrating on Std. 1 - 4, each of them having different, syllabus-reflecting images, on the walls. Decorating each Happy Classroom costs, based on the location and state of the walls, $400 -750. The price includes:

  • Introduction of the project to the teachers, headmasters, traditional authorities and local representatives of the Ministry of Education
  • maintenance of the old walls
  • painting materials and art work
  • a short training for the teachers on how to utilize the decorations during their lessons
  • administration

Each Happy Classrooms will last for at least 10 years and have a positive impact on over 1,500 Malawian pupils.
