Tiyende Pamodzi Maize Mill Project

Background:

The Tiyende Pamodzi CBO has four preschool groups and a home-based care program for the sick and elderly in their village.  They have developed and run these programs without any external support since 2002. However, to sustain and expand their community services they have been lacking financial support.

Aim of the project:

  • Providing an income generating business to support the CBO's Community Programs

 

Achievements:

  • CBO members researching and selecting a maize mill business as the most viable way for generating income to sustain their preschool and home-based care program (March 07)
  • boNGO providing a loan for purchasing building materials (June 07)
  • CBO members constructing the maize mill building (August 07)
  • Receiving a donation of 4,000 Euro (Stichting Kutseka Foundation, Holland) to purchase the maize mill (August 07)
  • Initial training for the CBO members in Business Management and Mill Operation (Sept 07)
  • Opening of the maize mill, steady supply of customers who appreciate the closer proximity of the mill to their community (October 07 to date)
  • Continuous monitoring and assessment of the business' progress through boNGO's Program Director (October 07 to date)
  • Consistent stream of profits enabling the CBO to sustain and enhance its community programs and pay back the loan

 

Summary and Figures:

  • CBO Preschool Program - four community preschools for 200 children
  • CBO Home-Based Care Program for 47 sick and elderly
  • 18 months of successful operation of the maize mill
  • Profit of approximately 1,100 USD to date

 

Goals for 2009/2010:

  • Continuing regular supervision visits and loan payback. How: boNGO Program Director to regularly meet and evaluate the situation with the CBO´s Executive Committee.
  • Using a part of the generated money for the construction of the Model Childcare/Community Center. How: The CBO to provide payment for local work forces and locally available resources.
